India shook the world yesterday when it said it had conducted three underground nuclear tests, its first in 24 years.

The Government said the blasts, carried out close to the Pakistan border in the state of Rajasthan, established that it had 'proven capability' for a weapons programme. Pakistan reacted angrily and Washington said the move could trigger sanctions.
