Good move

I couldn't agree more with John Guest (letter headlined, ' 'Whole film' refreshing experience', South China Morning Post, May 7), about the pleasures of seeing a film in its proper 'pillar box' format (and what he didn't mention, with stereo, not Nicam, sound).

This is particularly so when viewing on a wide-screen TV, which, incidentally, both cuts down the perceived size of the 'annoying black' zones and lets you sit at your normal distance from the screen.

I too think that wide-screen showing would be a good move for certain, if not all, films, and I would certainly support the extension of the practice by the TV stations.

Don't hold your breath, though, the stations presumably rely on commercial videos, and nearly all of these that can be bought or hired have, annoyingly, 'been formatted to fit this screen', whether you like it or not.
