'Joseph' dreams of Tracy

Darren Day, the new star of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, says that the reputation he gained in the English tabloids as a ladies' man resulted from his penchant for dating a string of high-profile women.

'Actually, I only had two girlfriends who were starring in soap operas but the media perceived it as if I was dating dozens.' Darren, however, says he doesn't really mind having such a reputation.

'There are worst things to be called,' he jokes. 'And actually it gives me an edgier image. Once they tar you with a brush, it sticks,' he says. But he has a steady girlfriend at the moment, soap actress Tracy Shaw, whom he has been with for a year.

'I don't really have time to party much as my workload has been really crazy the past 1.5 years.' Darren admits that he is much calmer now. 'It all started when I got the Joseph part when I was 23. It was the big break I needed to launch my career. I will be eternally grateful for this role.' Having just released his eponymous debut album, featuring 'major 1970s revival music', Darren also hosts a programme on British television, is due to start another West End musical Summer Holiday when he returns and has a couple of dramas and sitcoms in the pipeline.

And to live up to his reputation, Darren plans to 'enjoy the nightlife here as much as I can'.
