Firms team up to create largest Web site for soccer extravaganza in France
Technology has turned a dream into reality for the millions of football fans who will be unable to attend the World Cup in France this year.
The 1998 World Cup will not be just another football event as computer giant Hewlett-Packard, software supplier Sybase, information provider EDS and France Telecom have worked to turn it into a 'virtual corporation', establishing the largest Web implementation in the world.
The system will help register and schedule 15,000 volunteers and 500 full-time staff, tracking and issuing accreditation for 50,000 VIPs and 10,000 media representatives.
More than 2,000 PCs and 100 servers will be used in the World Cup network for applications ranging from Web sites to ticketing.
France Telecom also has engineered high-speed digital lines between its central Paris location and each venue to help in the mass operation.
The most expensive part of the project lies in building its infrastructure and developing the application, rather than maintaining it.
