Doubles dominance 'key to Cup victory'
Indonesia have their two formidable doubles teams to thank for their 11th Thomas Cup title, says Hong Kong coach Chan Chi-choi.
'The Indonesians have two trump cards in their two doubles teams. They kept on winning,' said Chan.
'Indonesia looked quite ordinary in singles. Because they were almost guaranteed victory in the two doubles, they only had to win one point from their three singles for victory. This was very much the case against Malaysia in the final,' he said.
Indonesia relied on world number four pairing Candra Wijaya and Budiarto Sigit and their Olympic team of Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky for their Thomas Cup title.
'Denmark and China are actually stronger than Indonesia in singles but they are not nearly as strong as Indonesia in doubles. This was the key to Indonesia's success,' said Chan.
He said China's triumphant Uber Cup team could go on dominating world team badminton for the next three to four years.
He said China had the scope to win two more successive Uber Cup titles, adding that he didn't see their rivals threatening them in the near future.
'China can continue dominating the Uber Cup because they have a very strong and young team.
'Indonesia were relying on Susi Susanti but she's semi-retired. She played as well as she could manage but she can't improve because she's not getting any younger,' he said.
