BID TO BOOST COURT EFFICIENCY, FIGHT GRAFT

A campaign has been launched to improve judicial efficiency and fight courtroom corruption, said Judge Li Fan.

He said the courts faced a serious backlog of cases. Some judges were unable to close cases within their legal time limits.

The judiciary handled more than three million civil cases last year. Fewer than 100,000 judges could hear such cases, he said.

Judge Li said the judiciary's drive to recruit more judges had been hit by the Government's plan to streamline the bureaucracy.

Efforts would also be made to halt corruption among judges. The campaign, launched last month, came after Xiao Yang took over from Ren Jianxin as the president of the Supreme People's Court in March.

Unlike Mr Ren, Mr Xiao wore only one hat as president of the court, said Judge Li.

State Councillor Luo Gan has taken over two other duties from Mr Ren, as party secretary of both the Central Committee of Political Science and Law, and the Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Social Security.
