Swedes danced in the streets of Stockholm as 50,000 welcomed the national ice-hockey team home from its world championship triumph.

Following disappointment at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, the team went undefeated in the Zurich championships to claim its seventh world title.

It hammered defending champions Canada 7-1, defeating a line-up of NHL stars including four Olympians.

Victory in the two-match finals against Nordic rivals Finland restored national pride. The team won the first game 1-0 and drew the second 0-0.
