Japanese harbour-freight firm Mitsui Wharf Co, says its has filed for bankruptcy court protection because that was the only way to avert a takeover.

The company, which owes 20.37 billion yen (about HK$1.13 billion), was granted protection under the corporate restructuring and rehabilitation laws by the Yokohama District Court.
