More than 900 young people who had made enormous strides in their personal achievement, even when the odds were against them, were awarded at a ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
The annual awards were part of the Character Achievement Scheme, sponsored by the Quality Education Fund and organised by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Education Department and Radio Television Hong Kong.
Earlier this year, schools in Hong Kong, including secondary and primary, and kindergartens, were asked to nominate one pupil each who had shown personal courage and strength of character.
Among the winners was 14-year- old Yu Chui-yee, a Primary Six scholar from Ka Ling School.
Plucky Chui-yee, who is recovering from bone cancer, described how she fought the illness and the devastation of having a leg amputated.
Chui-yee said optimism and toughness pulled her through.
