Graft arrest confirmed

The arrest of the former vice-chairman of the Guangxi Government has been confirmed by the local people's congress, Xinhua reported yesterday.

Xu Bingsong, 56, was arrested on charges of taking bribes, the news agency said.

He had recently been formally put under arrest by local prosecutors.

An investigation into his case was still in progress, said Xinhua. The report hinted that it would be months before Xu would go on trial.

Xu has also been removed from the congress.

Xu is the most senior Guangxi official to be arrested on corruption charges in recent years.

A Guangdong native, he was assigned to Guangxi in 1968 and is said to have accumulated millions of yuan over the years by selling government jobs, earning himself the nickname Millionaire Xu.
