Journalists stay sober
State-controlled mainland newspapers gave Mr Clinton a restrained welcome yesterday.
He shared the front of the People's Daily with articles on the Government's anti-drug campaign and efforts to increase public compassion.
Other newspapers also largely followed the model for state visits - dry accounts of arrival times, details of Mr Clinton's entourage and the names of local officials who welcomed him. Coverage of the colourful show that welcomed Mr Clinton to Xian was straightforward.
