Attackers of publisher still on the loose

The record $3.8 million reward for the arrest of two men who chopped off publisher Leung Tin-wai's arm has been gathering dust for more than two years.

Police yesterday appealed again for information on the savage attack.

The reward offered by a private trust fund will be valid until October 27.

Mr Leung was attacked by two knife-wielding men in his North Point office on May 15, 1996. He had just launched his new magazine, Surprise Weekly, which has since folded.

The magazine had published articles on triads and it was suspected that the reports angered some gangs.

He suffered multiple chop wounds and his left forearm was severed.

His arm was re-attached after 17 hours of surgery.

The wounding prompted senior journalists to organise a reward for the arrest of the attackers.

Police yesterday issued a sketch of a man aged about 28, standing about 1.62 metres tall.

He is of thin build, with a dark complexion and a regular hairstyle. He was wearing a brown jacket during the attack.

People with information about the case can report to any police station, call the police hotline on 2527 7177 or write to General Post Office Box 999.
