A driver jumped off a 20-metre slope in an attempted suicide bid after scarring his girlfriend's face in a car crash yesterday.

Lee Chi-wai, 22, lost control on a bend in the Aberdeen-bound lane of Island Road at about 3am. His car hit the opposite carriageway and rammed into the hillside near Deep Water Bay.

Ma Po-shan, 19, had her face scarred by glass and was unconscious in the rear seat. Her brother, Po-hang, nine, was sitting next to her and also sustained injuries.

However, Mr Lee and his 24-year-old friend in the front passenger seat were unhurt.

'He shouted he was going to kill himself before jumping down the slope,' a police source said.

Firemen rescued the unconscious man from the slope. The man and his girlfriend were taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where his condition stabilised.

Miss Ma was admitted to the intensive care unit in serious condition, while her brother was stable.
