I REFER to the letter headlined, ''Rid us of the stench of dead fish'', by Catherine Tsang (South China Morning Post, March 9).

The nuisance was caused by heaping up of dead fish on the banks of fish ponds by fish farmers in the vicinity of Fairview Park. A similar complaint was received by the Regional Services Department in February this year and the dead fish were removed by the pond owners upon advice by staff from the department.

Following the recurrence of the nuisance, advice on proper disposal was given to all the pond owners in a joint visit of the department's staff and the Chairman of the Hongkong New Territories Fish Culture Association. All the dead fish have now been removed and there is no longer any smell.

The department will continue to monitor the situation.
