Projects a boost for quality education

The Quality Education Fund has proved to be an effective vehicle in channelling financial resources for school-based initiatives, according to a government official.

'I am glad to see not only schools from the pre-primary, primary, secondary and special education sectors have put in applications, but tertiary institutions, school-sponsoring bodies and other education bodies have also responded enthusiastically,' Secretary for Education and Manpower Joseph Wong Wing-ping said. The quality and variety of successful projects demonstrated the enormous potential of front-line educators in improving the standard of education, he said.

The fund has approved 290 projects - involving grants of $206 million - from the first batch of 2,367 applications.

About 1,600 more projects were still being assessed and the vetting would be completed by the middle of next month, the chairman of the fund's Steering Committee, Irving Koo Yee-yin, said.

'Applicants who fail to get funding this time need not despair as calls for applications are made twice a year,' Mr Koo said.

'I am pleased that all these projects are directed towards raising the quality of education in Hong Kong,' Mr Wong said.

'The projects will provide immense impetus for the education sector in developing students' potential.'
