John McEnroe hit four aces in the champions tie-breaker to defeat Jimmy Connors 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 and capture the Mentadent Joe Dumars Champions senior tournament in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

It was the 40th time McEnroe and Connors have met during their careers. McEnroe won 23 of their 33 on the men's tour, but trails Connors 3-4 on the senior circuit.

'It's been a while since I've beaten Jimmy in a big match,' McEnroe said. 'From the first day I got into tennis until today, Jimmy was there. So every time I look at what I've accomplished, I have to compare it to Jimmy to see how I measure up.' The match was marked by several swings in momentum and hinged on big serving by McEnroe in the third-set champions tie-breaker.

In the tie-breaker, McEnroe grabbed an 8-3 lead with four spectacular aces.

A service winner and a forehand return wide from Connors gave McEnroe his first senior circuit win over Connors since 1995.

'When he serves like he did in the tie-breaker, what are you going to do?' asked Connors.
