Anglo-Norwegian conglomerate Kvaerner has begun converting the Philadelphia US Naval Shipyard into its first US shipbuilding facility as part of a US$445 million project.

Kvaerner expects to keep costs low at the site by using robots to do much of the work, although it still expects to employ about 1,000 workers. Construction of the first ship is set for mid-1999.
