The family of a dissident is being prevented from hiring a lawyer to represent him in court, a human rights group said yesterday.

Lin Zumian, father of Hangzhou dissident Lin Hui, was taken away by Zhejiang police on Wednesday after he hired a lawyer in Liaoning province to defend his son. The father returned home yesterday, the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China said.

Lin Hui was arrested last month for trying to register an opposition political party.

The centre said Lin's father had trouble hiring a lawyer for his son in Zhejiang and contacted Liu Jianping in Liaoning's Anshan, who agreed to take the case. Legal officials from Anshan warned Mr Liu they would not provide him with the credentials to represent Lin. Lin's father then started looking for another lawyer.

Dissidents in Hangzhou and Changsha had applied for permission to stage marches to call for the release of Lin and fellow activists Wang Youcai and Zhang Shanguang, the centre said.
