Old city's tour push
The ancient capital, Luang Prabang, will be the focal point of a new tourism campaign.
Vientiane has declared 1999 and 2000 its 'Years of Tourism', for which the Government has announced new attractions to draw travellers.
Most of the promised attractions are to be in Luang Prabang, which was recently named a national heritage site by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
The Government has launched plans to renovate Luang Prabang's Royal Palace, to have an elephant show and to offer river rafting on the Mekong to tourists visiting the old city.
