New T&T claims 8pc of global calls

Wharf Holdings says its telephone offshoot, New T&T, has secured 8 per cent of the international call market and 15 per cent of Hong Kong's Internet traffic.

The company's interim profit statement also said that at the end of June New T&T had installed more than 43,000 lines serving more than 2,400 business customers on its own fixed-line network.

In addition, it had another 5,000 residential phone users and more than 333,000 lines registered for use of its IDD007 International service.

The company claims that 90 per cent of the numbers transferred from Hongkong Telecom to the new fixed-line operators have been captured by New T&T.

It said New T&T was the second-largest phone network in the SAR, with an optical network 640 kilometres long.
