An alcoholic father who hit his young daughter with a rod until her nose bled was given a suspended sentence yesterday.

The 54-year-old unemployed man hit his four-year-old daughter with a wooden rod, kicked her buttocks and smacked her more than 10 times on June 21, Eastern Court heard.

He lost his temper because 'she didn't listen to him', prosecutor Katherine Yeoh said.

The father admitted cruelty to a child and said he regretted the attack. He also said he had a drink problem.

His wife of 15 years is living at a refuge centre with their two daughters - the other is 15.

The younger daughter was admitted to Tang Shiu Kin Hospital with swollen knees, bruised eyelids and scratches on her neck, the court heard.

Magistrate Garry Tallentire sentenced the father to four months' jail suspended for two years.
