Weather takes toll on bridge

Cracks in the Ting Kau Bridge's surface are believed to have been caused by unusual weather over the past few months, a Highways Department official said yesterday.

Extensive use by heavy vehicles might also be a factor.

'We have to conduct some tests,' the official said.

'It is hoped that findings will be available by the end of the month.' Problems were found in the surface of the bridge's northbound lane in mid-August. Civil engineers said the cracks could pose a danger to road users.

The southbound side of the Tsing Yi Bridge was closed for about two hours last night when a ship's crane hit the side of the bridge after a collision with a mainland cargo vessel. No one was hurt.
