I live in Ap Lei Chau and often see large amounts of floating rubbish and other pollutants in the Lamma channel.
On September 2, there was a rainbow-coloured oil slick stretching out to sea. For the first time, I decided to call the Marine Department Pollution Control Unit. A very polite man answered and asked for all the details and thanked me for reporting the spill. He said he would call back.
Within 30 minutes I received a mobile phone call from their patrol launch asking if I could see their boat in the water below my apartment.
Then another vessel came in and sprayed dispersant into the water. They cleared up the oil as best they could.
I was impressed by their efficiency and quick reaction. I hope others will be encouraged to report pollution in Hong Kong waters in the future.
