Termites take blame

Forget corruption or the heavy rains, the main cause of this year's floods is all down to termites.

A high-level official said termites had eaten away at flood defences causing seriously weakened dykes to burst.

Some officials even blamed construction faults on termites.

According to China Business Times, the mainland had the world's worst termite problem, causing 1.5 billion yuan (HK$1.4 billion) of damage and economic losses each year.

The newspaper said infestations were concentrated in the Yangtze River region and along the coast.

Zhou Baizhi, director of the Wuhan Termite Prevention Research Institute, said termites were the main culprits behind the burst dykes.
