McDonald's will extend its controversial Snoopy campaign, allowing customers to make extra orders after the promotion ends on October 8.

After that date, consumers can buy an order form for $23.80 - which gets them an 'extra value meal' coupon and one of the Snoopies offered on any day between September 25 and October 8. However, the souvenirs will not be available for collection until the end of the year.

'The overwhelming response has raised McDonald's concerns of safety and comfort for our customers,' a company spokesman said. 'Queues have resulted, sometimes affecting normal restaurant operation.' The plastic beagle, sold for $6 with every extra value meal, has attracted long queues outside restaurants since the 28-day campaign started on September 11.

In at least two instances, police have been called to settle disputes between customers.

Doctors and nutritionists have attacked the campaign, saying the high-fat and high-carbohydrate diet was unhealthy for children.
