Past achievements do not guarantee future success. This is more so in the current economic environment. Organisations which could afford to pay lip-service to quality during an era of prosperity can no longer do so in these turbulent economic times.

Although companies which had invested in quality improvement over the years may have an edge over the competition, they must now take a good hard look at their quality efforts in light of the changing economic landscape. In short, no one can rest on their laurels.

As Hong Kong companies adjust to a new and definitely more demanding business environment, success will come to those that best define, achieve and guarantee quality. Total Quality Management (TQM), when planned and implemented correctly, can lead to measurable improvements in business performance.

We at the HKMA look forward to recognising companies that have effectively implemented TQM in Hong Kong through the 1999 Quality Award.
