Hawkers ignore Starr ban

The report by US special prosecutor Kenneth Starr is being sold at street stalls in Guangzhou despite a ban by the authorities.

Officials are investigating a book, sold under the title The Sex Report of Clinton, which is available at stalls in Taojinlu for 20 yuan (HK$18), according to Guangzhou media reports.

The 230-page book contains 'indecent photos' downloaded from the Internet and was said to have been published by Qinghai People's Publishing Company.

However, a company spokesman denied it had published the book and said it had asked Guangdong publishing authorities for information about the case.

Hawkers said the book became available a few days ago and one man said he had already sold 14 copies.

Market distributors said the book had proven popular given the interest in Mr Clinton's 'inappropriate relationship' with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

One distributor offered reporters a more than 30 per cent discount if they bought in bulk.
