A 37-year-old sailor competing in the Macau Government Yacht Trophy race drowned after falling off his yacht in rough seas on the way back to Hong Kong.

Other Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club members hauled Terence Wong Yiu-wing, who had more than 10 years' experience, out of the water but he was dead on arrival at Macau Government Hospital.

Another female competitor suffered injuries after the yacht struck an unidentified object in the sea off Taipa Island, at around noon.

Eight men and one woman were on board the boat when the accident happened after the yacht race. Macau marine police are investigating the incident.
