Shot fired at fleeing car thief suspect

A POLICEMAN fired one shot at a suspected car thief armed with a hammer in Yuen Long early yesterday.

No one was injured and police arrested the 17-year-old suspect.

Emergency Unit officers spotted a man acting suspiciously in a goods van parked at Hung Shui Kiu, near Tin Shui Wai, at about 2.20 am.

The police driver and four other officers got out of their car to investigate.

The suspect tried to hit the police driver with the hammer and ran off.

The policeman caught the suspect after a short chase, but the man threatened him again with the hammer, forcing the officer to draw his revolver.

He fired one shot which missed, police said.

Six vehicles parked in the vicinity were found to have been tampered with and tools for forcing open car doors were found.
