Man held in 'magic sword' case

The man wanted in connection with the murder of Yu Chi-fung, 5, who was lured to his death with promises of a 'magic sword', was arrested yesterday. Police detained the man, 41, in Battery Street, Yau Ma Tei, at 9am.

Chi-fung's body was found stuffed in a striped nylon bag in a building in Castle Peak Road on Saturday. The suspect lived in the same building.

Police said the child was murdered after a man approached him as he and a friend played with toy swords outside Block Seven of Un Chau Estate, Cheung Sha Wan, on Saturday afternoon.

Chi-fung was said to have been lured to a flat with the promise of seeing a magic sword. 'The boy was killed when he wanted to leave the flat and cried,' a source said.

It is believed the suspect has no relatives in Hong Kong. Sources said he lived on monthly government grants, including a medical allowance, and was unemployed but sometimes worked as a TV extra.

Chi-fung lived with his father in a flat at 338 Castle Peak Road. His mother, who lives in China, is now in Hong Kong.

A police source said the suspect was taken to New Territories North police headquarters, where detectives took a statement from him.

He was then driven to Cheung Sha Wan police station, where he was detained overnight.
