Act to curb dangerous driving
The standard of bus and car driving in the SAR is by far the lowest of any place I have been in the civilised world, and this from someone who grew up partly in Italy, where driving is notoriously chaotic.
The erratic lane changes without using indicators; the dangerous overtaking manoeuvres; pointless over-accelerations followed by unnecessary sharp braking; the tailgating; the concept of 'this lane is mine and I will yield to no-one' . . . and so on.
I think double-decker buses driving along windy roads such as Magazine Gap Road deserve a special mention.
I have never seen such irresponsible driving in my life. These roads are often narrow and bus drivers must understand that driving downhill, around sharp bends, at 80 kilometres per hour, while taking up half the opposite carriageway is not an acceptable way to drive.
Can nothing be done about the thoughtless and dangerous driving in the SAR? Every time I see a bus crash on the news, or another lorry on its side, or another pile-up, I wonder how many more lives will be lost before something is done to make the offenders understand that courteous driving is not only a sign of good manners, but that it makes everyone's life easier and safer.
