Hong Kong has come a long way from 1948, when the Electrical and Mechanical Office, forerunner of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, was born.

Not only have we emerged from the aftermath of the war years, we have grown to become a leading commercial and financial centre as well as one of the most successful cities in the world.

During the past 50 years, Hong Kong has seen many changes. Growing with Hong Kong, keeping pace with and sometimes facilitating these changes, EMSD has been quietly working behind the scenes to contribute to our success. In face of our future challenges, EMSD's hard work and dedication will continue to help underpin the seamless operation of this wonderful metropolis. I am pleased to offer my congratulations to the department on the celebration of its 50th anniversary, and to show my appreciation for the accomplishments achieved on behalf of the community over this time.
