Star returns with wealth of experience

HONGKONG'S star junior woman squash player Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin completed her two-week New Zealand training tour $800 richer after finishing third in her first professional tournament.

Chiu proved that her first round victory over Rachel Baker in the Putaruru youth championship the previous week was not a fluke when she again beat the New Zealander in straight games in the North Shore women's open.

The 15-year-old then avenged the Putaruru defeat when she again came up against New Zealand junior international Patrina Black in the quarter-final round.

A determined Chiu, beaten by Black at Putaruru, was at her very best as she carved out a 9-4, 4-9, 9-4, 10-8 victory to book her semi-final berth.

She then went down in straight games to Jade Wilson, the number two seed.

Chiu, however, bounced back with a gallant 1-9, 3-9, 9-6, 9-5, 9-7 victory over former New Zealand junior representative Anne Hui in the play-off for third spot.
