The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) was in a unique position this year - it was actually among the award winners in addition to sponsoring the productivity category.

The organisation won a Certificate of Merit in Machinery and Equipment Design from the Chinese Manufacturers' Association for its non-contact three-dimen sional scanner. Using computer technologies and a smart electronic control panel, the scanner can measure three-dimensional objects by advanced optical design.

Patrick Leung Hon-yin, one of the six-member HKPC design team which developed the machine, said it could measure any three-dimensional object, including human faces, within 30 seconds.

Initially, the machine is being used in personal portrait sculpture to provide accurate replication of a person's head using laser technologies.

But the HKPC is working on proposals to develop the equipment for other sectors.

'We are exploring medical and animation and virtual reality applications,' Mr Leung said.

The focus of the medical interest was to create masks that would protect patients undergoing radioactive treatment.
