Driving on left - UK not alone

Simon Macklin's piece on the 'Europe To-day' page (South China Morning Post, October 29) provided a whimsical filler on a slow news day. But, as often happens with pieces originating in the UK, Ireland is overlooked.

Let there be no doubt that the UK is not the only other country in Europe to drive on the left side of the road. There is one more. Guess which one. Ireland was ruled from England from 1170 to 1923 (excluding 18 years from 1782 to 1800).

Like Hong Kong Ireland is a former British colony, except that nowadays it is a case of 'same system, two countries', in its relations with the UK.
