Downturn takes toll on tunnel system

Felix Chan

A unified tunnel payment system should have attracted a better response, its operator says.

Autotoll, which operates at nine tunnels and on the Lantau Link, has 111,000 members who made an average 230,000 trips a day last month, 40 per cent through the Aberdeen tunnel.

Another 4,000 applications had been received since October 1, when the Autopass and Electronic Toll Systems merged.

'When we first announced news of the merger in March, we expected applications to grow quickly,' said Frankie Yick Chi-ming, general manager of Autopass.

But he said the economic downturn seemed to have put off potential Autotoll customers.
