FAMOUS cities and holiday resorts define the new Etienne Aigner collections - with each design pared down to essentials breathing new character, femininity and a subtle play of colours and textures.

The season combines the opposing colours of Kyoto and New York, each with a vibrance all its own. The Kyoto collection is bathed in soft greens and femininity. The classic Aigner wool checks, pure silk blouses and scarves define serenity and the restraints of Kyoto.

The blue and grey of New York skyscrapers and the East River are accented in the Aigner high-buttoned jacket and wider fashion silhouette. City outfits are made in the finest nubuk leather, while metallic surfaces bring a blue shimmer to parkas. Light coats are in wool gabardine for between seasons.

For sun-baked days, there are the Cairo and Santa Monica collections, bearing inspirations from desert sands and safari sports. Fine linens and crepe cottons dominate.

Predominant in all the new Aigner collections is the mix-and-match freedom for personal fashion expression.

Skirts, in knitted natural silks and linen, are in varying lengths - long and flowing or short.

Trousers extend from the narrow cigarette pants to the wide a la Marlene Dietrich, moving on to the fashionable Capri or the dressed down air of Bermuda shorts.

As temperatures soar and hasty retreats are made to the Cote d' Azur and Capri, Aigner welcomes back the summer dress, worn on its own or with matching jackets.

Blouses are, essentially, sporty with eye-catching details and short sleeves. Young Vichy checks, redefined in a retro style, enhance jackets while blouses are paired with denim jeans in decorative appliques. Maritime stripes or embroidery glitter and enhance T-shirts.

Meanwhile, Etienne Aigner moves back to the 1960s to unravel its new season collection for men. Uncompromising quality, simplicity and maximum comfort mark the new Aigner designs.

Suits and lounge jackets lean towards a slim silhouette - but with no sacrifice to maximum comfort and freedom.

The Broken Suit, an American tradition, is also being revived with high-twist yarns being used to create lively but visually cool surfaces. Lounge jackets are partially lined for summer comfort.

Blousons, long jackets and coats boast new finishes for outdoor rough and tumble. Details underscore the sporty fashion theme and offer easy mix-and-match freedom throughout the collection.

Colours arouse images of sand, sea and blue, clear skies with shades of lagoon, coral, gold, atoll and algae.
