Major cities around the world are at loggerheads in an international publicity battle to position themselves as the focal point of the millennium celebrations. One after the other, governments and key institutions have unveiled their ambitious plans to usher in the dawn of a new era.
Some of these schemes are creative and inspirational, others border on the bizarre. In Hong Kong, however, a clear picture has yet to emerge and residents still have little idea about what can be expected locally of the symbolic event.
SAR officials have recently pledged to take a leading role to co-ordinate efforts to mark the occasion. Given the time constraint, however, it seems likely that Hong Kong can only opt for something convenient, familiar and ready-made, rather than anything entailing careful preparation.
The third millennium will not start until January 1, 2001. But decision-makers all over the world are more than happy to get a head start. In Chicago, for instance, authorities are launching a three-year observance programme next January. The city is eager to turn its commemorations into a campaign to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
The mayor of Paris has announced highlights of that city's commemorative activities. They include an egg-shaped structure descending inside the Eiffel Tower. On touchdown, hundreds of television screens will be revealed, relaying party scenes from all round the world.
London's answer to the challenge is a controversial Millennium Dome which aims to capture the new spirit of the country.
Meanwhile, Britain's ITV is reported to have selected 10 couples who will attempt conception on March 17 next year, with the aim of delivering their babies on New Year's Day in 2000. The station will report on the successful couples during the pregnancy, to explore what it means for them to bring in a child into the new millennium.
