Concern over Telecom bid

Hongkong Telecom's bid to buy Star Internet is, to me, an alarming situation and should raise a number of red flags within government and consumer bodies.

The importance of cheap Internet access cannot be over-emphasised for the future of education, business and social development in Hong Kong.

Telecom's monopolistic tendencies will work against us all if it is allowed to dominate the interactive television and Internet service providers markets.

Just as Telecom's premium integrated services digital network prices stunted the adoption of wide area networking in Hong Kong, its dominance in provision of Internet access will hamper rapid adoption of Internet usage.

Many small ISPs are reliant on Telecom for equipment and other services and can be easily snuffed out or controlled.

I urge the Government to deny Telecom's application.
