Race should not be the issue
MY vision of joy in the world is contrasted by my perception of Filipino maids being harassed in Central on their day off. A perusal of letters to the editor over the past couple of years, exposes an underlying racial intolerance.
The news columns refer to the efforts as ''ethnic cleaning'' in Central, which have fortunately been diverted thanks to government intervention.
A stroll around Central on Sunday reveals a throng of largely joyous ladies relaxing after a hard week's work.
Many of the letters refer to a ''gweilo jogger'', ''Filipino domestics'', ''Chinese mahjong players''. To the writers I would ask, what if you left off the racial classifier? Would it change the nature of your complaint? Are you complaining about the persons' behaviour or are you complaining about their race? JEREMY M. BARR Mid-Levels
