Driver cleared of raping girl

A truck driver accused of raping his girlfriend's daughter when she was nine years old was freed yesterday after jurors unanimously found him not guilty.

The 38-year-old man had denied raping the girl twice between 1995 and July last year.

While answering questions via circuit television to the court, the girl said she had not reported the alleged rapes because she had told her mother who did not believe her.

The girl's mother also gave evidence in the three-day Court of First Instance trial before Mr Justice Thomas Gall.

The mother and the freed defendant have since married and the girl is living in a children's home.
