Fifty-eight per cent of Americans believe President Clinton should resign rather than face a Senate trial if the House of Representatives votes in favour of impeachment, a new poll says.

More than six out of 10 Americans, or 61 per cent of those polled, do not want to see him impeached and removed from office.

Only 38 per cent say he should fight to save his embattled presidency in the Senate if the House tomorrow approves any of four articles of impeachment adopted last week by the Judiciary Committee, a Washington Post/ABC survey released yesterday said.
