A national law on natural resources has been extended to Hong Kong.

The Law of the People's Republic of China on the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf took effect on Christmas Eve.

The law declares the mainland's sovereignty and jurisdiction over its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, including its natural resources.

It provides for mainland administration in fishing, exploration of natural resources, marine research, navigation, overflight and laying of submarine cables in the areas according to the country's laws and international treaties.

The Basic Law states that national laws and resolutions on nationality, diplomatic immunity, national emblems and issues of territorial sea shall apply to Hong Kong.
