Provisional Urban Council chairman Ronald Leung Ding-bong yesterday accused a newspaper of 'false reporting' over an alleged scuffle with a reporter.

Apple Daily yesterday reported that Dr Leung had grabbed a reporter by the neck and snatched his mobile phone at the Sha Tin Jockey Club on Monday.

The reporter had been questioning Dr Leung about use of the council limousine for private purposes.

Police were called after the reporter's camera flash fell to the floor. The case had been classified as criminal damage and an investigation was under way, a police spokesman said.

Dr Leung said he had grabbed the reporter's hand when he sought to leave after taking pictures of him with his brother's family.

'He chased me to take pictures. The mobile phone and the flash fell to the floor during the chase and I just picked them up to give them to security to ensure I would not be disturbed again.' Dr Leung described the newspaper's report as 'false', saying his privacy and human rights had been infringed.

Apple Daily editor-in-chief Ip Yut-kin declined to comment.
