Enthusiastic athletes turned a drizzly and depressing day into the event of the year for a New Territories school.

Several new records were set at the 14th annual sports day of SKH Li Ping Secondary School at the new Shing Mun Valley Sports Ground.

The colourful uniforms of the cheering teams and the sound of the drums put everyone in an excited and competitive mood.

Competitors from the four houses - Red, Green, Blue and Yellow - marched up the track at the start of the meet, accompanied by the loud cheers of their house members.

Yellow House defeated the other three houses after intense competition and emerged as the overall champions.

Most of the track and field events were held on the first day of the two-day meet.

Athletes gave their best despite the limited preparation time they had.

The giant electronic screen and scoring mechanism used for the first time added to the excitement.

The 3,000 metre race was the climax of the second day, which turned out to be perfect.

Athletes displayed impressive strength in the long distance race, especially the female runners, despite the fact that some of them were not strong in endurance races.

A small group of students, especially the boys, gave an impressive performance. They beat all the other competitors in the race, including several teachers.

The final and most enjoyable event of the day was the teacher-student 400 m girls' and boys' relays. The runners competed under a serious but friendly atmosphere.

It was also the first time for NET teacher Amanda Jane Rees to compete with the students.

The student teams beat the staff teams in both relays. The female staff team became the runners-up in the girls' relay while the male teachers came second and third in the boys' relay.

The meet ended with a closing ceremony.

Principal Chan King and school governor the Right Reverend Thomas Soo Yee-po, Bishop of Western Kowloon, congratulated the athletes on their success and encouraged them to keep up their performance.

They also expressed their gratitude towards the PE teachers for organising such a well- planned event.
