Purge of corrupt party cadres
President Jiang Zemin has ordered an all-round purge of corrupt party cadres to prevent social unrest.
The President was shown on national television last night telling a plenary session of the Communist Party Central Commission for Discipline Inspection to intensify the crackdown on corrupt cadres. 'We will punish severely violations of the disciplines of the party,' he said.
The session banned officials from holding extravagant meetings at 12 renowned scenic spots, including in Lushan, Jiangxi province.
Officials were also banned from using public funds for some overseas trips.
Mr Jiang said the campaign to clean up the party was urgent as 'the party now faces some of its most serious challenges in history'.
He added that some cadres had ignored orders by the Discipline Inspection Commission and had become indifferent to party discipline which had undermined some party organisations.
He highlighted areas, including the economic sector and grassroots work, in which he said it was crucial for cadres to abide by party guidelines.
'Party members and officials of party organisations at each level must handle conflicts with the public carefully to ensure social stability. No cadres would be allowed to raise unreasonable policies against the people,' he said.
