The economic downturn is taking its toll on local charities, especially the smaller ones which are now left scrambling for fewer available funds. But interest has been strong for tickets to an upcoming movie premiere, whose proceeds will go to the Hong Kong Society for Child Health and Development, the Rotary Club of Kowloon and the Maitreya Project, which runs schools, hospitals and leprosy centres.

The Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romantic comedy, You've Got Mail, premieres in Hong Kong on February 4 at UA Pacific Place. The $1,000 ticket price includes cocktails and a buffet supper, and a chance at a lucky draw. For ticket information, call 2738-4486.

Scented sticks Solid fragrances are not new, be they in the form of Estee Lauder's little gold compacts or French brand L'Artisan's powdery variety (available through Joyce).

Japanese designer Kenzo has transformed his signature scents into a pencil-applicator: just unscrew the cap and apply to wrists or behind the ears. The wand-like sticks come in Kenzo's popular fragrances, including L'Eau par Kenzo.

Home yet away Hong Kong residents who want to stay in the SAR for the Lunar New Year but need to feel like they have escaped can take advantage of a special offer by The Peninsula hotel.

Pay $2,325 for one night's stay in a deluxe room, and get the second or third night for $766. This includes a round-trip home/hotel transfer by Rolls-Royce, breakfasts and a 20 per cent discount in the hotel's bar and restaurants. The offer is open for all of February and may be worth doing just for the view of the fireworks from the hotel's sun deck on February 17.
