New Year fireworks to be most spectacular
Organisers of the Victoria Harbour Lunar New Year fireworks display yesterday promised a record-breaking show.
They also said sponsorship for the display had not fizzled amid the economic downturn.
Themed Prosperity and Harmony for the New Millennium, the 23-minute display will use a record 31,388 firework shells.
Organisers hope the auspicious symbols of life and prosperity associated with the numbers three and eight will augur well for the Year of the Rabbit.
The largest display that Hong Kong has seen so far - for the opening of Tsing Ma Bridge - used 26,000 shells.
The Home Affairs Department had struggled to find backers for this year's show, but the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations and the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen stepped in to split the $6 million bill.
Federation secretary Au Yeung Sing-shiu said they had not been pressured into sponsoring the February 17 display by the Government.
The federation also provided cash for last year's handover anniversary and National Day firework celebrations.
A fireworks preview will be held on Saturday at Mission Hills Golf Club.
