Taxi, minibus and lorry drivers staged a protest at the Central Government Offices yesterday against a police plan to tighten regulations on speeding.

They said the move would hit about 200,000 professional drivers in the SAR whose business had fallen by 30 per cent due to the airport moving to Chek Lap Kok and the economic downturn. Police recently proposed tightening the points deduction system for every kilometre above the speed limit. Fines would also be increased.

A total of 369 speeding offences were detected by police during a four-hour operation throughout the SAR early yesterday. A total of 161 fixed-penalty tickets were issued.
