China Express International Transportation has opened a new office in Qingdao.

China Express, a joint venture between international logistics group U-Freight and the Dalian Foreign Trade Department, will initially operate as a satellite of the U-Freight/China Express regional hub in Dalian.

The Qingdao office already holds local operating licences and is awaiting approval by Beijing of its class-A forwarding licence, which is expected to be issued soon.

'This new office is an important addition to our network of freight and logistics bases in China,' said Anthony Fong, managing director of U-Freight/China Express.

Qingdao was a major commercial centre which was gaining increasing international significance and U-Freight was hoping to develop a strong customer base there.

'We are offering a range of local and international air- and sea-freight services connecting into our international office network,' Mr Fong said. 'Once we secure the class-A licence, we expect the traffic volumes to grow considerably,' he said.

U-Freight is focusing on sportswear- and footwear-manufacturing sectors, which are strong in Qingdao.

The Qingdao office is routing European air-freight shipments via Beijing, while international sea-freight consignments are moved via a daily shipping link with Pusan.

North American air freight is routed via Seoul. To support these, a full local-area collection and delivery service is being provided by the company.

The new office is managed by Mr P.Y. Liu.
